Safety first

Every student deserves a safe and positive journey to and from school. Students, families, bus drivers, schools, and the Transportation Department all play an important role in creating a safe, respectful environment on the school bus.

Waiting for the bus

Students should arrive at their bus stop 10–15 minutes before the scheduled pickup time and wait a safe distance from the road. While waiting, students should stay with the group, respect private property, and be ready to board when the bus arrives.

Boarding and riding safely

Students are expected to board the bus safely, remain seated while the bus is moving, keep aisles clear, and follow the driver’s instructions at all times. A calm, respectful environment helps the driver focus on what matters most—getting everyone to and from school safely.

Respecting others

The school bus is an extension of the school. Students are expected to treat the bus driver and fellow passengers with courtesy and respect, use appropriate language, and help create a safe environment for everyone.

What not to bring on the bus

For safety reasons, students should leave the following items at home or make other arrangements for transporting them:

• Large sports equipment
• Oversized musical instruments
• Sleds
• Large school projects
• Animals (except approved service animals)

If you’re unsure whether an item can travel on the bus, please contact the Transportation Department before sending it with your child.

Working together

Our goal is prevention, not punishment. By working together, students, families, bus drivers, schools and NFSB can create a safe, respectful environment where every student enjoys a positive ride to and from school.

When behaviour becomes a concern

Most students enjoy a safe and positive ride each day. When behaviour creates a safety concern or repeatedly disrupts the bus, the driver will complete a Bus Report.

Bus Reports are reviewed by school administration, and parents or guardians are informed. Depending on the situation, follow-up may include conversations with the student, restorative measures, school-based consequences, or the temporary or permanent suspension of bus privileges.

Our goal is always to help students learn from their choices while maintaining a safe environment for everyone on the bus.

How families can help

We all play an important role in helping students develop safe bus habits. A quick reminder before school each morning can make a big difference.

Encourage your child to:

• Arrive at the bus stop on time.
• Listen to and respect the bus driver.
• Stay seated while the bus is moving.
• Use kind and respectful language.
• Keep hands, feet, and belongings to themselves.
• Help keep the bus clean and safe.
